Cologne, September 30, 2019. In the first six months of 2019, SPORTTOTAL generated revenue of EUR 25.2 million and EBIT of EUR -4.2 million that is in line with the company’s expectations. The management of SPORTTOTAL AG continues to anticipate lifting sales in the second half of 2019 over the first half-year. and is expecting EBIT in a bandwidth of EUR -4 to +0.5 million. With a look to the overall year 2018, EBIT had stood at EUR -8.0 million, in connection with revenue of EUR 37.6 million. “Currently, our main focus is on the internationalization of our sports streaming platform. Consequently, we have intentionally factored in start-up losses for the entire year 2019, in order to generate sustainable positive earnings contributions over the medium term. In the area of our international digital business, where we are holding a 51 percent share, we are targeting – Europe-wide and together with local advertising partners, national sponsors, pay contents as well as value added services – revenue of EUR 80 million and an EBIT margin in excess of 40 percent in the year 2024,” as CEO Peter Lauterbach outlined. The financing of SPORTTOTAL International is to be ensured by various outside capital options (Reserved Alternative Investment Fund, Sale-and-Lease-Back, etc.), These are currently being marketed and placed by the Luxembourg based Groupe Fuchs. The objective: Europe-wide, amateur sports events will be broadcasted live, in high quality and fully automatically on “sporttotal.tv“.
Multisport platform with dynamically expanding coverage
In the meantime, sporttotal.tv is cooperating with 20 of the 21 regional associations in German amateur football and has now broadcasted some 11,600 matches across all sports types. In this context, all in all, some 30,000 hours were streamed live on the company’s own platforms. With these activities, sporttotal.tv has already expanded considerably beyond football, and has established itself as a genuine multisport-platform with dynamically expanding coverage and range, while featuring numerous innovations: as a platform spanning different sports types for associations, active participants, players and fans alike, sporttotal.tv broadcasts amateur football, Germany’s First Division Volleyball, ice hockey, field hockey, Futsal, motorsports and American Football. In future, the matches of the women’s’ First and Second Basketball divisions will be featured as an exclusive. “With sporttotal.tv, we have established a genuine multisport platform with an extensive coverage and range. Numerous innovations such as the live remote production, our new design spanning all sports types, and the valuable partnerships forged with Google and Samsung clearly show the dynamic pace of our further developments.” Thanks to the partnership with Samsung in the area of smart TVs, viewers of the “Samsung Sportworld“ can not only access the pay streaming offerings of international providers such as Sky and DAZN but can also tap into the unique contents from amateur and professional sports provided by sporttotal.tv. With a look to the second half of the ongoing business year, plans envisage the launch of a portal for local advertising placement at sporttotal.tv. This will enable sponsors active in the environment of a club or association to book specific advertising packages on the sporttotal.tv platform for the matches and events of a specific club or association. Last but not least, the Berlin Development Lab, is engaging in a forward-looking development partnership with Google in the areas of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning – for example, in order to develop a high-performance video software that will extract and analyze data of matches and players.
Tangible success in internationalization as well as in the LIVE and VENUES areas
The internationalization strategy of the sports streaming platform is bearing initial fruit. “Right now, we are already seeing the first successes of our expansion – as evidenced by the successfully launched roll-out of amateur football in France.” Moreover, the LIVE segment – with the Porsche Experience, now extended ahead of schedule, and the successful ADAC TOTAL 24h race on the Nürburgring – as well as the VENUES segment – with the preparations ongoing for the technical equipping of a race track project in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where Formula 1 races are to be staged again as of the year 2021, in addition to preparations for additional large scale projects.
